Peeta’s love for her confuses and burdens Katniss. Throughout the books, Peeta and Katniss’ friendship is too uncertain for love. And as long as you have it, nothing bad will happen to you, okay? It’s a television show, and being in love with that boy might just get you sponsors which could save your damn life. Only 4 percent of women surveyed said they’d be OK as the taller one. Under different circumstances, she would be touched by their acts of gratitude.

I hope that they grow into a couple like Finnick and Annie were, both traumatized, but the only ones who are able to understand and support one another. It’s too bad their story isn’t fleshed out in the end. I do agree it is too abrupt and the narration left me feeling a little empty. But the beauty of it is that it reflects how Katniss feels a lot of the time. The male tribute from District 12, Peeta is in love with Katniss and becomes her main ally and romantic interest during the Games. Peeta is best characterized by his love for Katniss and willingness to sacrifice himself for her.

Pretends: They Trip And Fall In District 12

Only the thought of Prim watching her at home motivates her. She thinks of Rue and hopes she’ll bump into the other Careers, whom she no longer fears. As the day goes on she replays the events of Rue’s death in her head, and fastmeet she realizes the boy from District 1 is the first person she’s deliberately killed in the Games. She thinks of his family and friends at home and their grief and anger. Suddenly trumpets sound, signaling an announcement.

Katniss expects a feast, which is a tactic the Gamemakers have used in the past to lure the tributes into the same area for a fight. Under the new rule, tributes from the same district will both be declared winners if they are the last two left alive. Katniss, realizing that she and Peeta can both survive, immediately calls out Peeta’s name.

She, however, doesn’t want to get anyone in District 12 in trouble, so she says that she sold her mother’s silver locket. Then, she describes how she and Gale took the money to the market and the Goat Man was there with an injured goat that he was planning to sell to Rooba for meat. Katniss purchased that goat after Rooba came by and said that she, in fact, didn’t want the goat; then she winked at Katniss.

Throughout all four Hunger Games films, it’s clear that the books make a much finer point of detailing a love that both have and will endure. Katniss and Peeta have a tumultuous history together from the start of the movies. The flashback scene of Peeta throwing a starving Katniss burnt bread in the street doesn’t exactly send a clear message to viewers regarding where the two stand. Granted, the characters themselves don’t even seem to know where they stand in relation to each other most of the time. There are some scenes where Katniss seems to be obviously faking feelings for Peeta, but others where her love for him is plain as day. Katniss was presented with the choice between Peeta and her childhood friend, Gale Hawthorne .

Throughout the series, she refers to him as the “boy with the bread”. This is how she really thinks of him — as a provider. After years of starvation and struggle, she is not emotionally capable of loving him except as a provider of food and safety. One interesting aspect of Peeta and Katniss’ relationship is the evolution. The two start off as virtual strangers, then they enter into an uneasy friendship that finally progresses into love. There were people to love, people to morn and people to out right loath and hate.

Loves Him: Goes Back For Him In The Games

It is because of her love for Prim that Katniss loves Rue and goes to great lengths to attempt to protect her. Everyone who has seen the movie trailers knows the line, “I volunteer! I volunteer as tribute!” This emotional moment occurs because Katniss is so protective of her sister that she cannot bear to see Prim go into the Games. She is an archer and a hunter, a provider and a sister. To some, she is a friend, and to others, she is the girl who sings.

After the reaping, this becomes a problem for Katniss because she knows she must see Peeta as her rival, but she is also aware she owes her life to him. To this day, I can never shake the connection between this boy, Peeta Mellark, and the bread that gave me hope, and the dandelion that reminded me I was not doomed. What broke her about the Capitol taking him was that she could do nothing to protect him. Her worst fears were realized and there was no way to give herself in exchange. She realized then how deeply her love and need for him progressed, but she still knew before as well.

At first she thought he was lying and she spent a lot of time thinking that he was pretending to be interested in her and that he was so good at spinning lies that he even had her fooled. In the cave she realised he really was in love with her and that if nothing else, he was worth having as a ‘good friend’ at least. So after getting over this first hurdle of believing that someone could be interested in her for who she was rather than what she could do, her next hurdle was admitting that she could have these feelings for someone else too.

However, she feels she has just caused more trouble and given more fuel to the fire that is the growing rebellion. Her suspicions are confirmed when they witness the district’s Peacekeepers shooting the old man. Peeta and Katniss are thanked by the mayor and offer some personal words of thanks to the families of Rue and Thresh.

She thinks about Gale and knows that she’s going to have to face him as well as Peeta once she’s a “safe” distance from the Capitol. So far, she has been able to avoid addressing her conflicting feelings because of the Hunger Games, but now she will have to tackle them head-on. She feels as if she’s been lying to two people, and when Peeta learns that Haymitch had to coach her on how to act in love, he feels betrayed and wants to know what has been real and what has been an act between him and Katniss. Again, there’s this theme of how the Hunger Games can blur reality.

Why Katniss Does Love Peeta When The Hunger Games End

If she ever wants to come to her senses, come down from those fences, he’ll be there. When he is taken from her and brought to the capital, she finds herself wishing he was there to comfort her at night, realizing that he’s the one who makes her feel the safest and most calm. Katniss nearly winces at this, and attempts to make him be quiet while still convincing the cameras that she has feelings for him. It’s hard to figure out exactly how Katniss is feeling toward Peeta when they hunker away together in the cave in the first movie. Katniss clearly has some kind of affection or care for him, since she chooses to take care of him. When Peeta hit the electric fence and stopped breathing, Katniss was genuinely scared.

It is not the boy willing to die for her during the games. It is not the boy willing to die to kill her during the revolution. This is a new man, and she has a choice, invest in him, or do not. She stumbles into the snow at first, but then she dusts herself off, rises, and begins waving to the photographers, arm in arm with Peeta. The camera zooms out to a neutral angle, giving audiences a sudden, somewhat startling reminder that oh, that’s right—Katniss is slightly taller than Peeta. The Hunger Games books by Suzanne Collins remain one of the most beloved YA dystopian series of all time.
